First Weekend

Overall it was an incredibly successful "opening weekend part 1" (part 2 is next weekend). I saw around 80 shows (many surprises and many disappointments), and 4 of those shows have made it to my list of recommendations.

Summer Film Phenomenon

This is the first year I haven’t closed TTP for the summer.  This year I introduced the compare chart for museums, which DON’T close or limit their hours in the summer so  I thought it would be helpful to keep that open.  As long as the site is open, I’m doing my best to see as many galleries as I can every single day (due to limited gallery hours and my day job, I only have about 20 minutes a day to see shows).

After the Armory

Rather than recommend things from the Armory that you can't see anymore, I decided to make a chart:  I looked at the number of pages of notes I took per show, then compared that to the number of galleries (or booths) at each fair I attended.  My "notes" are not necessarily positive, so the chart doesn't reflect how much I LIKED a show, but only now "noteworthy" (or useful) it was.  The chart is sorted from most useful to least useful. I'm not sure how "useful" this chart is.. but interesting.   p.s. "Independent" wins!.

Today's Galleries

In Chelsea, it’s easy to pop into 20-30 more galleries that aren’t on my “must see” list if I have extra time. Unfortunately, things are so spread out and semi-hidden in the Lower East Side, it isn’t so easy to diversify my viewing on a whim.  So this weekend I planned a good 30+ gallery route through the Lower East Side to see what was up at galleries I seldom visit.

Serra Deinstallation

Yesterday I conducted the first interview for TTP - you'll read much more about that later - but in killing some time before the meeting I happened upon the FULL ON deinstallation of the Richard Serra show.   It puts the picture in my

Today's Galleries

I find "de-installaions" extremely interesting.  Something about humanizing the work after it's been on a pedistal allows me to see it for what it is (good or bad).  I caught this glimpse of the de-installation of the Richard Serra show. The piece on the right is propped up off the ground about 6 inches, and at the top left (if you look close) you'll see a giant clamp ready for a crane.
