Simplifying contemporary art galleries in New York City

gallery tours

DIYdancer Think Tank

As an ever-growing fan and supporter of dance it was a pleasure to organize a gallery tour for DIYdancer.com.  I fully support their mission: “Through an online forum and NYC events, we aim to build awareness, facilitate conversation and constructive critique, and support artists’ development as individuals and professionals.”  In short:  To get dancers talking and supporting each other outside the studio (awesome) AND to do so through events that aren’t necessarily dance (even more awesome).   I look forward to organizing future gallery trips

Holt & Kayla

After my gallery tour with well-respected modern dance choreographer Pascal Rioult, I’ve had the pleasure of taking a number of his dancers out to the galleries as well. A couple days ago I ventured out with Rioult dancer Holt Walborn, and his girlfriend Kayla Radomski (also a modern dancer).

Pascal Rioult & Joyce Herring

Last Friday I had the pleasure of spending the morning with a true New York power couple – Pascal Rioult (world-renowned choreographer) and Joyce Herring (Associate Artistic Director of Rioult) at the galleries in Cheslea. I’m a big fan of the company – learn more about them here http://www.rioult.org/.

We discussed one of the shows in a cab after the tour. Here’s a short excerpt:

Nick, Jenna & Jane

Last weekend I took Jane Sato (my girlfriend and professional modern dancer for Rioult Dance Company), her friend Jenna Liberati (also a modern dancer) and her boyfriend Nick Sherman (a native New Yorker with fond memories of Chelsea in it’s grimier days) for a tour of the galleries.

Here’s what they had to say about a couple of the shows:

Gallery Tour

This weekend I took Therese (co-worker/friend) and Dan (her brother visiting from China) to a few shows in Chelsea. We explored the idea of “collage” - from cut and assembled pieces of paper to the city-sized sculptural installation at Madison Square Park (pictured above). We saw:

Gallery Tour

This weekend I took (pictured above from left) Mike, Jane, Marie & Hunter to see 5 shows plus a bonus gallery!  Rather than go straight from "The Top Five", I chose only 3 of the 5 and added some different shows to create a more rounded experience.  We saw five shows in different mediums dealing with "alternative portraiture" - a very loose category that I just made up.  We saw:

Gallery Tour

This weekend I took two separate tours.  The first tour was for my girlfriend's parents - Linda & Roger (soon to be pictured on the right). The second tour was with my co-worker Ann and her boyfriend Joe.
