Simplifying contemporary art galleries in New York City

Gallery Tour

Last month I took Elise (employee of my brother’s company “BeeDocs”) and her father Clifford to a few shows in Chelsea. We explored the idea of “enclosure”: Roxy Paine’s gallery busting root structure, Abelardo Morell’s beautiful room projections, Mika Rottenberg’s claustrophobic film, Anselm Kiefer’s enormous glass vitrines and Hiroshi Sugimoto’s representation of infinite space (the exact opposite of enclosure). If you missed the shows, I’ve linked them all here.

Roxy Paine @ James Cohan Gallery
Abelardo Morell @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery
Mika Rottenberg @ Mary Boone Gallery
Anselm Kiefer @ Gagosian Gallery
Hiroshi Sugimoto @ The Pace Gallery

I have invited them to give their thoughts about a show in the comments below.
