Uptown: Braque & Calder
I spent last weekend jumping around to a few dozen Midtown & Upper East Side galleries. Two exhibitions were way ahead of the pack and certainly worth the trip.
Uptown galleries have a totally different feel than Chelsea or the Lower East Side but the same rules apply – find the address and let yourself in (some galleries uptown have security or lobby attendants – just tell them where you’re going and they’ll help you out).
Georges Braque @ Acquavella Galleries
18 East 79th St (thru 11/30)
While Picasso gets most of the credit, Braque played and equal (or greater) role in Cubism. I’m shocked this amazing show isn’t in a museum. It’s my favorite in the city (and free!).
Alexander Calder @ Pace Gallery
32 East 57th St (thru 12/23)
When it comes to Calder’s mobiles, I always thought bigger was better – this show proved me wrong. This is one of those shows I saw, took the elevator to the lobby, and then went back up to see it again.
